Kyoto: Grind Your Own Fresh Matcha & Terrace in Arashiyama

45 minutes

Easy

Grind tea leaves into fresh powder using a traditional stone mill and whisk your own cup of matcha.
Step into a semi-outdoor sanctuary in Arashiyama, just steps away from the station. While most matcha experiences are held in enclosed, traditional indoor rooms, this workshop takes place on a sheltered sky terrace. Feel the seasonal breeze and enjoy the open-air atmosphere while staying protected from the sun or rain.  Begin with the traditional stone mill (Ishiusu). Unlike pre-packaged matcha, grind the raw tea leaves (Tencha) into a fine powder yourself. As you turn the heavy stone mill at a steady, rhythmic pace, hear the soothing sound of the stones meeting. The highlight of this process is the incredible, fresh aroma that is released only at the moment of grinding—an experience you simply cannot get with store-bought matcha.  Once you have created your own fresh matcha powder, learn the art of whisking. Under the guidance of friendly instructors, use a bamboo whisk (Chasen) to create a smooth, frothy, and delicious cup of tea. There are no intimidating rules here—focus on the joy of the process. Even if it is your first time, be surprised at how creamy and flavorful your own handmade matcha can be.  Located only a 1-minute walk from the station, this is the ultimate "cultural short break." Whether you are heading to the Bamboo Forest or returning from the Togetsukyo Bridge, easily stop by to upgrade your rest stop into an unforgettable cultural memory. Sip your freshly made matcha, take in the views from the terrace, and recharge for your next adventure.
